Custom Swing Sets and Yards with Slopes

Can we install a swing set on a slope?? Yes, If Your Slope Is Under 12" over 20'

If your backyard slopes 12 inches or less over 20 feet, King Swings can install your custom swing set, vinyl playhouse, or backyard playground without requiring professional grading.

If your slope is greater than that, you’ll want a landscaping company to level the area before installation. A level site ensures your swing set is stable, safe, and looks exactly the way you envisioned.

How We Install Swing Sets on Sloped Yards

Most sloped-yard installations come down to two techniques: digging down or blocking up. The steeper the slope, the more adjustments we need to make to ensure everything sits level and secure.

Digging Down

This is precisely what it sounds like: we remove soil where necessary so the tower, playhouse, or swing beam is stable.

Blocking Up

For more significant slopes, we use small support blocks made of Trex decking or pressure-treated lumber. These materials won’t rot, and they allow the crew to get the swing set stable. The weight of the swing set keeps everything solidly in place.

If you want the supports hidden, you can cover them with dirt or a patch of artificial turf. In many installations, as the Galaxy set shown in the example below, you can barely notice the supports once the set is in place.

Slopes Effect Large Sets More

Large custom swing sets with bridges, big playhouses, ball pits, and multiple towers tend to “show” a slope more dramatically. If your yard leans toward the uneven side and you’re dreaming of a Chateau, Palace, or similar layout, we always encourage you to send a photo so we can review the site with you.

How to Measure Your Yard's Slope

There are two options:

1. Send Us a Picture

We can see a lot from a picture. Snap a few pictures or even take a video of your site. If possible, take the picture with a fence or garden or something that helps show the angle of the slope then email it in to your rep.

2. Measure Your Slope With This Simple DIY Method

If you want an approximation, here’s a quick way to measure slope using two stakes and a 20’ string.

  1. Place your two stakes 20 feet apart in the area where the swing set will go.
(They don’t need to be pounded in yet).
  2. Tie one end of your string to the bottom of the first stake.
  3. Stretch the string to the second stake and tie it loosely so the string can slide up and down the stake.
  4. Pull the string tight so it forms a straight line between the two stakes.
  5. Use the string to create a level line: Slide the string up or down the second stake until the string looks level from stake to stake.A small line level (or smartphone level) helps but isn’t required.
  6. Once the string is level, firmly pound both stakes into the ground until the string is secure and taut.
  7. Measure the gap between the ground and the string at the lower end. If the string is touching the ground at Stake 1 and 6" above the ground at Stake 2 → your slope is 6" over 20 feet.
  8. That number is your approximate slope. Add a small margin of error because, well, you are using stakes and string. But this is a helpful way to get an approximation.

Real Examples of Swing Sets Installed on Slopes

King Swings has installed thousands of custom swing sets, vinyl playhouses, and playgrounds on slightly sloped yards. You’ll see examples across our galleries — from mild slopes to some pretty extreme ones. As the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words… and hopefully a few SEO keywords, too.

When to Level Your Yard Instead

If your slope exceeds 12” over 20 feet, professional leveling is strongly recommended. This ensures:

  • Long-term stability

  • Safe play

  • Proper alignment of towers, bridges, and beams

  • A clean, polished appearance

This is especially important for large or elaborate setups with tall towers or multi-structure layouts. A prepared site really makes those swing sets look amazing.

FAQs About Installing Swing Sets on Slopes

Can a vinyl swing set be installed on a slope?

Yes. King Swings swing sets can be installed on slopes up to 12” over 20 feet.

Will my swing set look uneven if my yard isn’t flat?

It depends on how bad the slope is. On extreme slopes and long sets, you may see a slope, but the swing set will be stable.

What if my slope is greater than 12” over 20’?

In that case, we recommend having the area professionally leveled before installation.

Is blocking up a swing set safe?

Yes. We use durable materials like Trex decking or pressure-treated lumber designed for long-term outdoor stability.

Does a larger custom swing set require a flatter yard?

Longer sets are more affected by slopes, so if you are getting a set from the Luxe Series, we recommend leveling the yard for best results.

Can King Swings review my yard before purchasing?

Absolutely. Please send us a picture and our team can assess your slope. If sending a picture, try to get something in the background like a fence that clearly shows the slope.
