Will a Swing Set Actually Fit in My Backyard? How to Measure

One of the most common questions people ask our swing set design consultants is, “Does this fit in my yard?”

What they really are saying is: “I am spending a lot of money on this swing set, I don’t want to make a mistake.”

No one wants their swing set to arrive feeling too cramped, too small, or like they missed the opportunity to go bigger. The good news? Most backyards work better than people think, and with the right planning, it is easier to get the fit right than you may expect.

Here is our guide to making sure a swing set will fit in your backyard.

How Much Space do I Actually Need for a Swing Set?

It’s your forever swing set, so you want it to fit perfectly without any drama. How do you go about ensuring that?

We are Here to Help

If tape measuring and dimensions aren't your thing, skip right to calling us for help with your swing set planning. That is what we are here for, so don’t hesitate!

Clearly Marked Swing Set Dimensions

We want to make it easy for you. Every swing set we feature on our website lists two dimensions: the raw dimensions shown on the schematic and the total space required in the Product Specifications.

Since we offer customization, you can work with the team to adjust your dimensions to fit your space and your dreams.

How to Measure Your Backyard (A Simple Estimate)

While not necessary, getting an estimate of how much space you have before calling us helps us help you.

Before browsing our swing sets, you should walk into your backyard. Most of us don’t work with measuring tapes or dimensions in our daily lives, so we understand how difficult it can be to estimate how much space you have.

Step 1

A simple way to do it is to count your strides across a given area. Out in your yard, imagine your swing set in a big square. Start at one end and step across, stepping as far as possible. If you are close to 5’ tall, your stride will be about 2 and a half feet long. If you are close to 6’, your stride will be about 3’.

For example, stride left to right and count. If you take 10 steps, you know your space is 25 or 30 feet left to right. Then walk from front to back, keeping count again. If that space is 10 strides, you have about 25 to 30 feet. So, your total dimensions would range from 25’ x 25’ to 30’ x 30’.

Step 2

Next, browse our website and look for the product specs section on the swing set that has captured your attention.

  1. The Raw Dimensions are on the Set Schematic Image. This is the actual size of the set.
  2. Total Space Needed. This is how much total space you need, including safety buffers.

In our example above, this set would comfortably fit in a 25’ x 25’

Not sure if you Measured Correctly?

The above is an easy way to get an idea of how much space you have. A few backyard photos or a quick sketch is usually enough for our team to help point you in the right direction. If it looks tight, we can help you determine more accurate dimensions. You don’t have to be spot on before reaching out!

Understanding Swing Set Buffer Zones

We mentioned safety buffers above. What are they?

It is rather simple. Safety buffers are an additional area around the swing set to ensure there is plenty of room to swing without hitting anything, exit the slides, and use the swing set safely.

For sets going into residential backyards, we recommend 3’ around the set, which is included in the total space needed.

FAQ

What if my backyard is oddly shaped?

Not every backyard is a perfect rectangle, and that is okay. Many families work around patios, pools, landscaping, retaining walls, or property lines.

A quick sketch, rough measurements, or a few photos are often enough for our team to help determine what layouts may work best.

Can a swing set go near a fence?

Yes, but proper spacing matters.

Swings, slides, and climbing features need room to be used safely and comfortably. We recommend planning around the Total Space Needed measurement on each product page rather than just the swing set's footprint.

Can I go bigger than I originally planned?

Often, yes. One of the most common things we hear is:

“I wish we had gone bigger.”

Families frequently underestimate the amount of usable backyard space they have. This is one reason we encourage rough measurements before purchasing.

What if I want a large swing set but my yard feels tight?

Customization can often help.

Depending on the swing set, our team may be able to help you rethink layouts, swap features, or guide you toward designs that maximize fun without overwhelming your backyard.

Will landscaping affect where my swing set can go?

Trees, roots, slopes, patios, irrigation, drainage, and retaining walls can all influence placement. Sharing photos of the intended area helps us identify anything worth considering before installation.

Should I level my yard before installation?

It depends on the grade of your yard as well as the size of the swing set.

Many yards work without major changes, while others benefit from minor grading or leveling. If you are unsure, send photos and measurements to our team and we can help advise on the next steps.

Do I need to know exactly what I want before calling?

Not at all. Many families start with:

“We’re not really sure what fits.”

That is completely normal. A rough idea of your space and how your family plans to use the swing set is usually enough to get started.
